    Fourth set:

    Federer 6-7 (4-7) Nadal
Federer gets the first break to go 2-1 ahead but Nadal takes the next four points as the errors return for Federer. Nadal clinches the match at the first opportunity with a winning forehand.

    Federer 6-6 Nadal
Nadal holds his nerve to force the tie-break as Federer mistimes a couple more of his groundstrokes.

    Federer 6-5 Nadal
Every point is hard-earned now and the crowd is really involved for the first time in the match. Federer misses a volley to go 15-15 but he hits an ace to get a game point and Nadal hits the return long. From nowhere, Federer is now one game from levelling the match.

    Federer 5-5 Nadal
A net cord helps Federer get to 30-30 when Nadal touches the net. Nadal looks certain to get a match point in the next rally but Federer scrambles brilliantly to earn a break point, and Nadal then plays a very nervous forehand to let Federer back into the match.

    Federer 4-5 Nadal
Nadal looks in a hurry to end the match. He opens with a forehand pass that leaves Federer sprawling. At 30-30 Federer comes up with a spectacular forehand drive-volley that matches anything seen today and a big serve helps him hold.

    Federer 3-5 Nadal
Nadal moves to within one game of retaining his title when Federer fires the umpteenth backhand of the match over the baseline.

    Federer 3-4 Nadal
Federer hits two aces and wins one lengthy rally as he holds serve comfortably and that should boost his confidence, although he still looks very flat.

    Federer 2-4 Nadal
Federer has won just two points on Nadal's serve in this set and he loses the game when he nets a forehand. The crowd chants "Roger, Roger" in an attempt to raise the world number one's spirits.

    Federer 2-3 Nadal
A much better service game from Federer raises the crowd's spirits at least but time is running out for him to get the break back.

    Federer 1-3 Nadal
Nadal holds with ease, embarrassing the incoming Federer on the final point with a fierce backhand to the Swiss player's feet.

    Federer 1-2 Nadal
Federer hits a double fault and then an ace to take the game, to a huge cheer from the crowd who clearly want this to go to five sets.

    Federer 0-2 Nadal
Nadal races through a love game and Federer looks a beaten man at the moment.

    Federer 0-1 Nadal
Another Federer forehand error gives Nadal even more belief, as does a dreadful volley, and the fired-up Spaniard breaks again. It looks a long way back for the world number one now.

    Third set:

    Federer 4-6 Nadal
There is hope for Federer when Nadal puts a forehand long on the opening point, but the Swiss lets Nadal back into the game with two forehand errors. When a Federer sliced backhand floats out on set point, Nadal lets out the biggest "Vamos" of the tournament.

"This is make-or-break now for Federer. We're starting to see the tennis we've been looking forward to, some exceptional stuff. Nadal has just played the best set and a half I've seen from him in this tournament."
    BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

    Federer 4-5 Nadal
Nadal has Federer scrambling again with one lob but the Swiss comes back with his first ace since the opening set, and immediately hits his second to keep the set alive.

    Federer 3-5 Nadal
Nadal is in control now, keeping Federer guessing by firing forehand winners to both corners and wrapping up the game with a fierce strike down the line.

    Federer 3-4 Nadal
For the first time in the match, Nadal produces some of his best tennis. Two mighty backhands have Federer reeling as the Spaniard fights back from 40-15 down to deuce, but Federer hangs on to take the game and stay in touch.

    Federer 2-4 Nadal
Nadal makes a pretty poor effort at a volley to slip 0-30 down but he gets back on track with a huge forehand winner and earns a game point. Federer then comes up with one of his best backhands of the match, flicking it across court from around the service line. Nadal takes the game with another magnificent forehand winner.

    Federer 2-3 Nadal
A nervous Federer sends a smash oustide the tram lines to give Nadal two break points, and he snatches a forehand on the second to give up the break.

    Federer 2-2 Nadal
As so often happens with Federer, he suddenly shakes himeslf out of a slump in form with some brilliant tennis and gets to 0-40 up. Nadal saves the first with a forehand winner and the second with a deft drop shot. Federer misses his third chance when a blistering forehand goes an inch wide. Both players find their form in the best game of the match. Another fizzing forehand gives Federer a fourth break point, before Nadal finds successive aces on his way to a big hold.

    Federer 2-1 Nadal
Federer holds serve with some more confident play on his forehand but the quality is not great from either man at the moment. The occasion seems a bit much for them both.

    Federer 1-1 Nadal
Nadal holds to 15 and the atmosphere is very flat on Phillipe Chatrier Court at the moment as Federer continues to struggle.

    Federer 1-0 Nadal
It's far from convincing but Federer claims an absolutely vital hold of serve from deuce.

    Second set:

    Federer 1-6 Nadal
Nadal levels the match with a solid service game and the match has completely turned on its head, down more to Federer's slump than anything dramatic from the Spaniard.

    Federer 1-5 Nadal
The Federer backhand is falling to pieces. He makes three dreadful errors to help Nadal to two more break points and gives up the break with a poor backhand volley.

    Federer 1-4 Nadal
A very limp effort from Federer hands Nadal a love-service game and the buzz has gone out of the match at the moment while Federer's head seems to be elsewhere.

    Federer 1-3 Nadal
Federer looks in trouble again at 15-30 but he punches away a clinical volley and follows up with a forehand winner on his way to getting off the mark in this set.

  • The trainer is on to attend to the strapping on Nadal's right foot.

    Federer 0-3 Nadal
Nadal consolidates the break of serve and Federer has gone off the boil for the moment, mistiming a couple of backhands.

    Federer 0-2 Nadal
Federer is cruising at 40-0 but then throws in a couple of unforced errors before Nadal beats him an unlikely exchange at the net. Federer suffers from the occasional lapse of concentration and that happens here as he nets a forehand to go break point down. For the second time in the match he serve-volleys at a crucial moment but Nadal makes the breakthrough two points later with a stunning cross-court backhand pass.

    Federer 0-1 Nadal
Nadal gets off to a better start in the second set but he is aided by a couple of Federer mishits.

    First set:

"That was a staggering set of tennis from Federer after being 15-40 down in the first game. Nadal's not really sure what to do and his gameplan's gone out of the window."
    BBC Sport analyst John Lloyd

    Federer 6-1 Nadal
Federer serves out the set impressively and one snatched volley from Nadal lands in the bottom of the net, suggesting the Spaniard is far from comfortable.

    Federer 5-1 Nadal
Nadal finally gets off the mark, moving to game point with a beautiful forehand winner. He then makes a nervous error but edges the game when Federer nets a backhand.

    Federer 5-0 Nadal
Federer's first double fault of the match brings Nadal back to 30-30 and the Spaniard takes control of the next rally, moving Federer around and finishing with a forehand down the line. Federer saves a first break point with a powerful off-forehand, a second with a service winner, and then successfully serves and volleys on the third. He goes on to hold and Nadal has now missed five break points.

    Federer 4-0 Nadal
Nadal is struggling to find his rhythm at the moment. He starts the game with two wild backhands before a heavy topspin forehand from Federer forces another error. But facing three more break points at 0-40 he starts working his way into the points and gets back to deuce. Two points later, Nadal appears to have won the game with a service winner when Federer calls for the mark to be checked, and the umpire says it was out. Federer breaks again by winning the point of the match after a lengthy rally.

    Federer 3-0 Nadal
Federer is in confident mood at the moment, powering one drive-volley winner off the forehand to go 30-0. Nadal responds with a backhand pass but Federer holds to 15 with another drive-volley.

    Federer 2-0 Nadal
Federer jumps all over Nadal's second serve to get 0-30. A couple of unexpected backhand errors from the Spaniard give Federer a surprising early break of serve.

    Federer 1-0 Nadal
The first point sees a big Federer forehand come back with interest from Nadal. Errors on the forehand and then the backhand from Federer give Nadal two break points, but he wastes an opening on the second when he blazes a forehand long. Federer comes through a tough game with a backhand winner and a big serve.

  • The players arrive on court to a huge ovation and go through the toin coss at the net, with Nadal bouncing from side to side like a boxer. It's 30C as the pair begin knocking up. Federer won the toss and will serve.

"I'd have to put my money on Federer today but he's going to have to come out here and play his best. It's such a big moment for him - he's never lost in a Grand Slam final and you can bet your bottom dollar he doesn't want to start today."
BBC Five Live analyst Mark Petchey

  • It's another baking hot day and with just a few minutes to go the Phillipe Chatrier Court is filling up, with the crowd enjoying a few jaunty numbers from a brass band. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are among the spectators.
