Maria Sharapova will face Martina Hingis for the third time this season after easing past Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-1 6-3 in Indian Wells.
Sharapova won her most recent match against Hingis
Hingis earlier saw off Dinara Safina 6-3 6-4 to reach her fourth semi-final in seven events following her comeback.
The Swiss former world number one beat Sharapova in their first meeting in Tokyo, but the Russian gained revenge in the Dubai semi-finals.
Justine Henin-Hardenne will play Elena Dementieva in the other semi-final.
Henin-Hardenne, a former world number one, beat Gisela Dulko of Argentina 6-3, 6-2.
Fourth seeded Russian Dementieva fought back from a set down to defeat Serbia's Ana Ivanovic 2-6 6-4 6-2.
Sharapova said she was looking forward to taking on Hingis again.
"I'm playing a great champion, someone that's achieved a lot," said Sharapova.
"And she's still young. Any opponent that I see across the net, I cannot think about whether they're terrible or they're great. I can't put that in my mind."
