Israel's Anna Smashnova picked up her 10th WTA Tour title when Tathiana Garbin retired with sunstroke in the inaugural Modena International final.
The 29-year-old was leading the first-set tie-break 3-0 when Garbin asked for a medical time-out.
But the Italian, suffering from cramp and close to fainting in the 35C heat, was clearly unable to continue and was carried off on a stretcher.
Tournament organisers later reported Garbin was out of danger.
