Fourth set:

Federer 6-2 Baghdatis
Federer closes out the match with a chip and charge that Baghdatis puts into the net. The Cypriot congratulates the champion with a trademark smile, while his French girlfriend cries in the stand. Federer's girlfriend Mirka takes pictures of her man celebrating victory.

Federer 5-2 Baghdatis
Another unlikely twist looks possible when Baghdatis gets to break point but he is too passive at the crucial moment and Federer sees off the danger with a forehand winner.

Federer 4-2 Baghdatis
Another Federer break point is a virtual match point but Baghdatis manages to hold and is gamely battling on despite struggling physically.

Federer 4-1 Baghdatis
Baghdatis shows there is still some life left in his tiring legs and gets to deuce but Federer has too much for him now on serve, and the Cypriot receives further treatment on his leg at the changeover.

Federer 3-1 Baghdatis
Baghdatis finally stops the rot by winning a lengthy game after several deuces and gets a huge ovation from the crowd. The Cypriot looks desperately tired, however.

Federer 3-0 Baghdatis
Federer is in exhibition mode as he rolls through his 11th straight game, and Baghdatis immediately gets the trainer on to massage his calf.

Federer 2-0 Baghdatis
An early end looks possible when Baghdatis slips over and stays down for some time but he picks himself up, only to drop serve to love.

Federer 1-0 Baghdatis
Federer opens with another hold and he has now won nine successive games.

Third set:

Federer 6-0 Baghdatis
Two magical return winners from Federer fly past Baghdatis and the set is over in a flash. Within half an hour the match has completely turned around and it's a long way back now for Baghdatis.

Federer 5-0 Baghdatis
Just when Federer appears to be heading into cruise control, he somehow finds himself a break point down. But he produces virtually the perfect rally to quash Baghdatis' brief hope.

Federer 4-0 Baghdatis
Baghdatis desperately needs to find his range once more. He has no answer as Federer chips and charges at his serve. He subsequently drops his serve with far too much ease.

Federer 3-0 Baghdatis
Baghdatis shrugs his shoulders and walks off the court like a petulant teenager. The unseeded new star of Melbourne is angered about a seemingly incorrect call which gives another very tight game to Federer.

Federer 2-0 Baghdatis
Federer tries to attack the Baghdatis serve at every venture, unleashing a stunning cross-court forehand to silence the crowd. That and two unforced errors from his Cypriot opponent give him a break point and he takes it immediately. Baghdatis shakes his head in disgust.

Federer 1-0 Baghdatis
Federer opens the third set with a confident hold and Baghdatis looks subdued for the first time in the match.

Second set:

Federer 7-5 Baghdatis
Baghdatis looks on course to take the set to a tie-break at 40-0 but Federer battles back to earn a break point. The Cypriot then fires a forehand deep and the umpire calls it out to give Federer the set. Baghdatis makes a brief protest but television replays suggest the call was good.

Federer 6-5 Baghdatis
Baghdatis gets the crowd on their feet with one scorching forehand winner that almost knocks Federer over. At 0-30, Federer is in serious danger but he is helped by a dubious line call as he gets himself out of trouble.

Federer 5-5 Baghdatis
Baghdatis shows no fear despite serving to stay in the set and puts the pressure straight back on Federer.

Federer 5-4 Baghdatis
A much better service game clearly pleases Federer, who gees himself up with the first "come on" of the match on his way back to the chair.

Federer 4-4 Baghdatis
One stunning backhand winner down the line reminds everyone just how good Federer can be and he goes on to earn a break point. Baghdatis is unfazed, however, and finds a big serve to get out of trouble.

Federer 4-3 Baghdatis
Federer holds comfortably and subdues the vociferous Baghdatis supporters, for the moment at least.

Federer 3-3 Baghdatis
The Baghdatis serve continues to whistle by Federer who cannot impose himself on the match as he usually does.

Federer 3-2 Baghdatis
Federer is still not at his best and looks vulnerable again at 30-30 but does enough to hold serve and move ahead in the set.

Federer 2-2 Baghdatis
For the first time in the match Baghdatis' level drops and Federer takes advantage, converting his second break point to level the set.

Federer 1-2 Baghdatis
Federer's game looks to be unravelling alarmingly when he puts a half-volley wide with the whole court to aim at. Baghdatis earns two more break point but cannot convert this time and Federer stays in touch.

Federer 0-2 Baghdatis
Baghdatis is showing no nerves at all and calmly consolidates the break.

Federer 0-1 Baghdatis
Baghdatis is absolutely hammering the Federer serve and has the world number one in real trouble. The Swiss finds a big serve and an edgy smash to save two break points but nets a forehand on the third and Baghdatis is a set and a break up.

First set:

Federer 5-7 Baghdatis
Baghdatis continues to hit the ball extremely hard and Federer looks unable to cope at the moment, dumping two shots in the net on his way to losing the game. For the first time in the tournament, Federer trails by a set.

Federer 5-6 Baghdatis
Federer looks in control at 30-0 but hands over the initiative with two poor forehands. Baghdatis misses one break point as Federer saves it with an edgy volley, but another forehand error two points later gives the Cypriot another break and he will serve for the set.

Federer 5-5 Baghdatis
Baghdatis remains in confident mood, cracking down some big serves as he holds to love.

Federer 5-4 Baghdatis
Another solid hold of serve. Federer shows what he can do in the best rally of the match that sees heavy hitting, a Baghdatis drop shot and a sliced backhand winner from the Swiss.

Federer 4-4 Baghdatis
Baghdatis quickly gets back on level terms with a confident service game, marred by one wild forehand.

Federer 4-3 Baghdatis
One desperately poor Federer forehand draws gasps from the crowd and he is taken to deuce again but holds on with two aces.

Federer 3-3 Baghdatis
Federer looks untroubled by losing serve and continues to play a patient game, sticking with the sliced backhand and giving Baghdatis no pace to play with. It works well, tempting the Cypriot into errors and a double fault sees the scores level.

Federer 2-3 Baghdatis
There is not much doubt that the crowd is backing underdog Baghdatis, who gets them on their feet by earning the first break point of the day. A wild Federer mishit hands Baghdatis the game.

Federer 2-2 Baghdatis
The crowd gets going for the first time today as Baghdatis hits a superb backhand winner. The Cypriot then wraps up the game with a sharp volley.

Federer 2-1 Baghdatis
Federer drops the opening point but then hits a service winner before playing three well constructed points, and the favourite looks in good form.

Federer 1-1 Baghdatis
There is no sign of nerves from Baghdatis as he holds his opening service game to 15.

Federer 1-0 Baghdatis
Federer makes a confident start, quickly getting to 40-0, but there is a warning sign from Baghdatis who fires one forehand winner past the top seed.
