Top seed Nikolay Davydenko retired with a wrist injury during his opening match against Sargis Sargsian on day two of the Swiss Open in Gstaad.
The Russian was leading 6-1 1-0 when the injury - which also ended his Wimbledon campaign - struck.
"I probably could have won today but then I probably would have had to retire in the second round so it wouldn't have made sense," he said.
Elsewhere, second seed Gaston Gaudio defeated George Bastl 7-5 6-2.
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Feliciano Lopez beat Igor Andreev 7-5 6-3, while Potito Starace saw off sixth seed Jiri Novak 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 7-5.
And fifth seed Ivan Ljubicic cruised past Ricardo Mello 6-3 6-2.
French Open semi-finalist Davydenko is scheduled to play for Russia against France in the Davis Cup later this month.
"I'll have an MRI scan tomorrow and take the next five days off," he said.
"If everything is okay after that I should be alright for the Davis Cup."
