The defending champion plays another sublime service game to retain his crown for the third consecutive year. The feat puts him up there alongside legends Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras, who also achieved three in a row at the All England Club.

Federer shows just how much it means to him by breaking down into tears. Roddick looks drained - emotionally and physically - as the pain of back-to-back Centre Court defeats to the Swiss begins to sink in.

After a 25-minute rain delay, play resumes. Roddick makes a positive start to the set by holding to 30. Federer puts a potential backhand winner low into the net to allow the American to take the game.

Second set:

Federer is just too good for Roddick in the tie-break. The Swiss races to a 3-0 lead, winning the first point with a wonderful forehand drive and taking the second and third thanks to unforced errors by Roddick.

However, the American closes the gap to 3-2 with two spectacular backhand winners down the line. But Federer eases ahead 4-2 with a cross-court backhand winner, then goes 5-2 up when Roddick fires a forehand low into the net.

The American vents his frustration by chucking his racket on the ground. But it does no good and another brilliant forehand winner by Federer earns the top seed a four-set-point cushion and he goes on to clinch the breaker at the first opportunity.

The players then return to the locker-room when the forecast light drizzle arrives in SW19 and the covers are drawn over Centre Court.

A blistering forehand drive into the corner of the court earns Federer the first point. He loses his advantage on the next point when he sends a backhand slice wide but he earns his first break point of the encounter when he sends a spectacular backhand down the line. Roddick rescues the situation with an aggressive forehand volley at the net. But Federer is really mixing up the shots now and goes on to seal the break.
