The rain has returned and is falling heavily now. The covers are back on all the courts and the referee's office confirms - if there was any doubt - that play is officially over for the day.

1715: Mark Barden, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
Play between Davenport and Mauresmo gets under way on Court One, but there's an unexplained further delay of 15 minutes before Sharapova and Williams emerge to begin their warm-up on Centre Court.

Finally the announcement everyone has been waiting for - play will begin, weather permitting, at around 1715, but with a change of schedule. Sharapova v Williams is now first on Centre Court, with Davenport v Mauresmo moved to Court One.

Having briefly raised the covers on Centre Court into the tent-like structure so familiar during rain delays at Wimbledon, the grounds staff get a big cheer as they remove them in anticipation of play finally getting under way. Here's hoping!

News from Wimbledon weather HQ that the rain is set to lift is greeted with loud, hearty cheers on Centre Court. But for now the umbrellas are still up. Ah! British summertime. Anyone for a Pimms? Well, it's about 50-deep at the Pimms bar, so I guess that means there's quite a few.

1548: Sarah Holt, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
Monica Seles, 1992 finalist, flew in last night to make a rare appearance at Wimbledon.
And the lady with the most famous grunt in tennis has responded to referee Alan Mills' criticism of the grunt, saying: "I never knew I was grunting, it was just part of my stroke."

1538: Sarah Holt, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
Six-time Wimbledon winner Billie Jean King is out on Centre Court entertaining the damp crowd with her Wimbledon memories.
And she names her last triumph in 1975, when she came out of retirement, as her finest Wimbledon moment.

With fine drizzle still hanging in the air, the biggest beneficiaries are Wimbledon's catering and merchandising outlets as the tennis-less paying public look for ways of filling their time.

The punters are forming not one but two queues to get into one of the Wimbledon shops, while the besieged assistants in the main store under Court One must feel like it's the first day of the Harrods sale.

The Centre Court crowd is getting restless and after some rousing clapping, there's an attempt to start a Mexican Wave (warned you!). But everything fizzles out when the referee's office confirms over the PA system that play with be delayed indefinitely while there is still rain in the air - no matter how light. Where is Sir Cliff when you need him?

1400: Andy Murray, the great new hope of British tennis
Says he wasn't happy about Henman Hill being renamed Murray Field. "You need something that rhymes like Murray Mount or Mount Murray," the young Scot told BBC presenter Sue Barker.

Looks like we spoke too soon - with fine drizzle coming down again, Wimbledon referee Alan Mills signals for the Centre Court covers to come back on - it's going to be one of those afternoons...

1350: BBC Sport at Wimbledon
The rain has stopped and it is brightening up. The covers have been taken off the courts again and if the weather continues to hold, play will begin shortly.

1300: Scarlett Elworthy, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
The rain has returned and play on the outside courts has been suspended. The covers are back on all the courts and the umbrellas are up on Centre and Court One. The weather forecast is not very encouraging, with persistent drizzle predicted throughout the rest of the afternoon. No sign of a stirring sing-song or Mexican wave - yet.

1240: Mark Barden, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
Play is finally underway on the outside courts now, but the clouds are still hovering above SW19.

1235: Scarlett Elworthy, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
The players are warming up on the outside courts. Despite the overcast skies, it looks like things are about the kick into life. Meanwhile, people are beginning to take their seats on Centre Court.

1200 BST: Scarlett Elworthy, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
The covers have come off the outside courts and providing there is no more rain, play will begin at 1230 BST - 30 minutes later than planned. The covers have also just been removed from Centre and number one court and the action is set to get underway at 1300 BST as scheduled.

There's always plenty of fancy dress and high fashion to admire at Wimbledon. A top award should go to the three guys who sweated their way through day eight of this year's championships inside furry Wombles suits. Another prize should go to the seven-foot plus WG Grace lookalike, who stalked around the grounds sporting a false beard and old cricket whites during week one.

But today we have two front runners for The Most Eccentric Category: a) The lovely lady who is dressed head-to-toe in Union Jack garb and is maybe having some trouble accepting that Tim Henman has not made it through to the second week for the first time in a decade. And b) the model who is wearing a pair of white jeans inside out - pockets blowing in the breeze are all very fetching but the big question has to be "why?" Unfortunately the mystery can only be unlocked if you speak Japanese.

Curator Honor Godfrey confirms that Maria Sharapova's golden shoes and Rafael Nadal's pirate shorts will be donated to the Wimbledon Museum at the end of the Championships.

1030: Simon Austin, BBC Sport at Wimbledon
There's light drizzle at SW19 at the moment, following some heavy showers earlier this morning.

The official Wimbledon forecast predicts rain this afternoon, with a 30% chance of thunder. But there should be brighter spells this evening.

0945: Boxing promoter Frank Maloney tells the Daily Record newspaper that world champion Scott Harrison wants to become Andy Murray's fitness trainer
Scott wants to do anything he can to breed another champion from Scotland

0823: Wimbledon referee Alan Mills, speaking on BBC Radio Four's Today programme
I think grunting spoils the spectacle of the game, certainly for television viewers and also, you know, for spectators here. I personally would love the players to stop doing it.

I'm not sure whether it is necessary or not, but I know with Maria (Sharapova), she is saying that she started grunting or screaming when she was four-years-old and she actually hates herself when she watches it on television.
