Tracy Austin's view

By Tracy Austin

Venus Williams
As we saw in her quarter-final win over Mary Pierce, Venus looks much better and it's good to see.

She hasn't been to the semis for a couple of years in a Grand Slam.

But she's been coming back from injury - the stomach muscle she pulled at Wimbledon two years ago - so she's had a good chunk of time to get back in the top 10.

She struck the ball extremely well - a little more length on her shots with that pace.

For me, Venus has a better shot at beating Maria Sharapova in the semi-finals than Amelie Mauresmo has against Lindsay Davenport.

Mauresmo's forehand sits up a bit on grass and Davenport's going to have a good go at it where she can drive through it.

Mauresmo can slice the backhand, flatten it out and hit the topspin but she can't flatten out the forehand as easily with that extreme western grip.

Davenport was saying 12 months ago that this might be her last Wimbledon but things have completely changed because she's healthy.

She had the knee surgery in 2002 and the foot surgery in 2003 and wasn't able to train the way she wanted to. She felt she was losing to some players she should be beating.

But she's back, she's healthy and she wants one more Grand Slam before she retires.

Williams father speaks

Richard Williams spoke about his daughters Venus and Serena and whether they still love tennis.

Richard hasn't been in the press that I know of in the last week, so maybe it was time.

It's nine days into the tournament and it's been too quiet, but I think he should take a page from Yuri Sharapova's book.

He's right there with Maria every step of the way but I've never see him in interviews - he lets everything Maria say shine.

But we've gotta give Richard a lot of credit on the other side. To give us two number one champions is a phenomenal feat.
