Jelena Jankovic has made strides since joining the tour four years ago.
The Serbian backhand-specialist broke into the top 20 for the first time in March after reaching her second tour final in Dubai.
The 20-year-old was beaten at the event by Lindsay Davenport but showed enough grit and determination to steal a set from the world number one.
More progress followed as she reached a top-level semi-final in Berlin where she again lost a close affair to Nadia Petrova in three sets.
Jankovic will want to do better when it comes to the Grand Slams where she has never got beyond the second round.
In the Australian Open, she reached the second stage for the third straight time but she could go no further than the first at Roland Garros.
Jankovic has a chance to improve at Wimbledon where she reached the second round on her debut.
