After surprisingly climbing to a high of fifth in the world during an excellent 2002, the Czech has since been slipping slowly but steadily down the rankings.

Novak turned 30 in March and the chances are he has seen his best days on the tour, with a respectable seven titles to his name.

There have been no notable scalps taken this season and Wimbledon is unlikely to mark a change of fortune, judging by past results.

His game is rock solid from the baseline if unspectacular, with consistent, accurate drives the basis of his stategy.

A good athlete, Novak will keep getting the ball back all day long given the chance.

But he can be brushed aside by the more powerful hitters at the top of the game, particularly on a fast surface.
