Clijsters works hard for victory
Kim Clijsters
Kim Clijsters overcame a scare before beating Ukrainian Tatiana Perebiynis in the J&S Cup first round in Warsaw.

The seventh seed, who has won two of the three tournaments she has played since returning from eight months off with injury, won 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-1.

Sixth seed Nathalie Dechy and eighth seed Silvia Farina Elia both came through their matches in straight sets.

But ninth seed Francesca Schiavone retired injured when trailing Maria Vento-Kabchi 1-5 in the first set.

Clijsters' fellow Belgian, Justine Henin-Hardenne, was also in action, overcoming Czech qualifier Denisa Chladkova 6-2 6-2.
