Farina Elia announces retirement
Silvia Farina Elia
Farina Elia is currently ranked 28th in the world
Silvia Farina Elia has retired after losing in the first round of the Gaz de France tournament in Hasselt, Belgium.

The 33-year-old was ranked 11th in the world three years ago, the highest ever place for an Italian woman.

"My body has really reached its limit," said Farina Elia, who has struggled to overcome a shoulder injury.

The Italian won three titles in her career, her best performance in a Grand Slam coming in 2003 when she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
