Tim Henman made impressive progress into the second round of the Madrid Masters Series with a 6-2 6-4 win over American Taylor Dent.
The British number broke Dent in the first game of the match and then held to establish an immediate advantage.
He took advantage of erratic serving from Dent to take the first set and never looked troubled in the second.
In the second round Henman faces Czech 10th seed Radek Stepanek, who beat him in the recent ATP event in Vienna.
"I was very happy with my level of play," the unseeded Briton said afterwards.
"Hopefully I can build on this in the last few tournaments of the year as I'm feeling better and better on court.
"I'm happy with the way I'm hitting the ball. I feel motivated but having played so little I still feel pretty fresh and in a good frame of mind."
