Justine Henin-Hardenne has announced she will not play for Belgium in the Fed Cup next year in order to protect her health and fitness.
Henin-Hardenne has struggled with illness and injury
The former world number one has been struggling with a virus, which leaves her exhausted, as well as injuries for the last 18 months.
As a result, she has had to curtail her playing and training programme.
Belgium take on reigning champions Russia in the first round of the Fed Cup in 2006.
Henin-Hardenne's withdrawal is a huge blow for the Belgians.
US Open champion Kim Clijsters has already indicated she will skip the event if Henin-Hardenne does not take part.
