McEnroe wins opener in Frankfurt

McEnroe lost to Jim Courier in London last year
John McEnroe swept past Cedric Pioline to win the first Delta Tour of Champions event of 2005 on Sunday.

The 46-year-old American legend beat Pioline of France 6-2 6-4 in Frankfurt to take the title.

"Today was nice because not only did I play great but I felt good on the court," said McEnroe.

"The goal for me was to peak for the last day or two. The last couple of months I've been working out hard so that I could do that."

Along with McEnroe and Pioline in Frankfurt were Henri Leconte, Anders Jarryd, Jim Courier, Goran Ivanisevic, Mikael Pernfors and Pat Cash.

This year's Delta Tour of Champions sees 11 tournaments leading to the season-ending Masters at the Royal Albert Hall from 29 November to December.

"The goal for me is to go all the way but it's going to be very difficult because there are guys like Cedric, Courier, Goran Ivanisevic and Richard Krajicek trying to stop me," said McEnroe.

"But that's what I want - to test myself, and I figure that the better players you play the more you lift your level.

"Anyone that watches the matches, particularly my matches, realises that it's serious."

The next event will take place in Doha, Qatar from 8-11 April.
