Monfils wins breakthrough title
Gael Monfils
Former world junior number one Gael Monfils won his first ATP Tour title on Sunday with victory over Florian Mayer at the Sopot Open in Poland.

The 18-year-old Frenchman won 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 7-5 to confirm that Rafael Nadal is not the only teenager making an impact at the top of the game.

"It's my first victory but I hope that it's the first of many," said Monfils.

"I mustn't let it go to my head. I have to keep my feet on the ground and continue to work to achieve my aims."

Monfils had never been past the last eight of a senior level tournament before this week.

He won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon junior titles last year before joining the professional ranks.

The Parisian will move up from his current ranking of 65 to inside the world's top 50 for the first time next week.

Nadal won his first tour title in Sopot last year and is now ranked number two.
