Gamewatch: Williams v Sharapova
All the action as Maria Sharapova stuns Serena Williams in straight sets to win the Wimbledon women's final.

Maria Sharapova sinks to her knees as Serena Williams nets a return to seal an extraordinary victory. She becomes the first Russian to lift the Wimbledon title to the delight of a rapturous Centre Court crowd. The Russian races into the crowd to embrace her father.

Williams 1-6 4-5 Sharapova
A buzz goes around Centre Court as some brilliant power tennis from Sharapova earns the Russian two break points. Williams digs deep to take the game to deuce, and saves a further break point - before a pinpoint Sharapova forehand wins a sensational rally at game point. Finally, two Williams mistakes give Sharapova the break - and the Russian will serve for the title.

Williams produces a superb backhand winner, and an even better backhand return to put the pressure on Sharapova at 30-30. But the Russian still refuses to buckle, with a brilliant forehand and a Williams error seeing her take the game.

Sharapova comes through a difficult test as Williams earns break point, but once again the Russian's nerve holds and she levels the set score.

Williams wins only her second game of the match, although she is again made to work, Sharapova winning two points before netting a return.


First set

Williams 1-6 Sharapova
Sharapova wraps up the first set in just 30 minutes. Despite facing two break points, the Russian takes the game to a tense deuce in which both players have chances. but ultimately the Russian prevails as Williams sends a return into the net.

Williams 1-5 Sharapova
Williams is clearly out of sorts, and serves her first double fault - and only her 10th of the championship to fall 15-40 behind. The champion saves both break points, and a further one, but a remarkable return by Sharapova on the fourth break point puts the Russian two breaks up.

Williams 1-4 Sharapova
Sharapova cements her break with an impressive service game. At this stage, Williams is in the unusual position of struggling to cope with her opponent's power.

Williams 1-3 Sharapova
Sharapova looks like she is unaffected by nerves, and proves it by grabbing the first break of the match. Williams looks under pressure as Sharapova produces some terrific winners.

Williams 1-2 Sharapova
Sharapova slumps 0-30 behind, but then quashes any fears that she is going to be blown away by winning four points in a row with some superb tennis.

Williams 1-1 Sharapova
A dominant service game from Williams who produces some huge serves to win to love. It gives Sharapova an inkling of what will be required if she is to upset the odds and win.

Williams 0-1 Sharapova
Sharapova races 40-0 ahead as Williams goes long or wide with her first three returns. Williams then produces a peach of a return, and Sharapova goes long with a lob - but the Russian holds out.

1409 BST: Sharapova leaves court, apparently to make an adjustment to her clothing.

1405 BST: The players are on court, knocking the ball to each other in a warm-up.

1402 BST: Sharapova wins the toss and elects to serve.

1400 BST: Both players come out on to Centre Court, which is currently bathed in sunshine.
