Belgian Kim Clijsters has confirmed she will miss the US Open after running out of time to recover from surgery to remove a cyst on her left wrist.

The world number two has not played since withdrawing from the German Open at the beginning of May.

Clijsters, who had already decided not to go to the Olympic Games, is hoping to recover for a tournament in her home town of Hasselt on 27 September.

The US Open begins at Flushing Meadows in the last week of August.

"Kim is officially pulling out," said a statement on her official website.

"The risks of re-injury are too great. Her left wrist is still healing.

"The muscle on her left wrist is still inferior to that on her right wrist which is why it needs to be built up in the next few weeks."
