After seemingly establishing herself in the world's top 10 in 2003, Dementieva has struggled to hold on to her place this year.
World ranking: 10
French Open best:
4th round (2002)
2003: 1st round
2002: 4th round
2001: 2nd round
The 22-year-old burst onto the scene in 2000, finishing the year 12th in the world after reaching the US Open semi-finals and winning a silver medal at the Olympics.
However, the following two seasons proved disappointing and it was not until Amelia Island last April that she won her first tour title.
She ended 2003 strongly and looked set to go further this year, but has yet to recover fully from a first round loss to Jelena Jankovic at the Australian Open.
Since then, Dementieva has only once managed to win two successive matches, although she did so with some style.
In March, she beat Venus Williams and Nadia Petrova on her way to the final in Miami before a heavy defeat to Serena Williams.
That week alone kept Dementieva in the top 10 and gave a tantalising glimpse of what is possible.
