Kim Clijsters made a winning return after five months out through injury as she beat Iveta Benesova at the Gaz de France Stars event in Belgium.

The former world number one, who had been suffering with a wrist injury, won 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 and now faces either Els Callens or Magdalena Maleeva.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Karolina Sprem battled past Anabel Medina Garrigues 4-6 6-4 6-4.

And Denisa Chladkova defeated sixth seed Silvia Farina Elia 6-0 6-2.

Third seed Elena Bovina of Russia eased past Germany's Vanessa Henke 6-1 6-3.

Clijsters admitted she had been thankful for the support of her home crowd as she returned to action.

"I was a little nervous at the start of the match but the support of the fans really helped me," said Clijsters.

"I'm really happy and my wrist didn't hurt at all. I am very happy to be back on the tour because being away wasn't good, but I had no choice.

"I missed the competition but at least it allowed me to do other things."
