Italian sixth seed Silvia Farina Elia survived a scare to reach the second round of the Belgian Open in Hasselt.

She lost the first set against unseeded Tatiana Perebiynis of the Ukraine but recovered to triumph 5-7 6-3 6-1.

On a low-key opening day, fifth seed Francesca Schiavone overcame fellow Italian Mara Santangelo 6-2 6-0.

Bulgaria's Magdalena Maleeva saw off Lindsay Lee-Waters of America 6-3 6-3, and home hopeful Kirsten Flipkens lost 6-2 1-6 6-4 to Germany's Vanessa Henke.

Former world number one Kim Clijsters is set to make her comeback from a five-month injury lay-off Wednesday after receiving a first round bye .

Clijsters is seeded second behind US Open finalist Elena Dementieva of Russia, who also starts on Wednesday.

Clijsters will face Iveta Benesova, while Dementieva takes on another Czech, Michaela Pastikova.
