Number one seed Amelie Mauresmo fended off a spirited challenge from Eleni Daniilidou to reach the quarter-finals of the J and S Cup with a 6-2 7-6 win.
Mauresmo won the opening set easily before her Greek opponent, with one title already under her belt this year, hit back in the second.
Daniilidou served for the set at 5-4 up, but failed to hold her nerve and it went to a tie-break.
Mauresmo made her superior power show as she clinched the set decider 7-3.
"I'm satisfied with the way I played today," said the world number three.
"It's never easy in the first match. I felt OK on the court and my game is coming together and I'm adjusting to the European clay court.
"She played a good match and she made it tough in the second set."
Mauresmo meets Francesca Schiavone in the last eight after Schiavone eased to a 6-2 6-3 win over Elena Bovina.
Magdalena Maleeva knocked out seventh seed Patty Schnyder 5-7 6-2 6-3 to set up a match with Venus Williams.
In other second-round matches, third seed Vera Zvonareva beat Lenka Nemeckova 6-1 6-3, while fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova took just 40 minutes to overcome Vera Douchevina 6-0 6-1.
