Henin-Hardenne withdraws
Justine Henin-Hardenne
Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne has pulled out of the Family Circle Cup because she is suffering from a low blood sugar count.

The world number one said she had been feeling lightheaded for some time.

"I have felt bad for two weeks now and that is enough. I will now go back home and do everything I have to do in order to get better," said the Belgian.

American Meghann Shaughnessy also withdrew after straining an ankle at last week's Amelia Island tournament.

The next scheduled event for both Henin-Hardenne and Shaughnessy is the German Open, which starts on 3 May.

Fourth seed American Venus Williams needed three sets to stop unheralded Samantha Reeves 4-6 6-4 6-3 and advance to the third round.

Her sister Serena had an easier time as the second seed went through with a straight sets victory.

Playing in her third tournament after missing eight months with a knee injury, Serena beat American wild card Kelly McCain 6-1 6-0.

In first-round action Martina Navratilova was beaten 6-4 6-4 by fellow American Amy Frazier.

Serbian Jelena Dokic beat Russia's Tatiana Panova 6-0 5-7 7-5, Australia's Nicole Pratt defeated American Alexandra Stevenson 6-4 7-6 (7/3) and Japan's Akiko Morigami ousted France's Mary Pierce 6-2 6-3.
