Andy Roddick ensured the United States ended day one of their Davis Cup World Group quarter-final with Sweden on level terms by beating Thomas Enqvist.
Roddick won 6-4 7-5 6-2 to cancel out Jonas Bjorkman's 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 defeat of Mardy Fish in the opening rubber.
Bjorkman teams up with Thomas Johansson in Saturday's crucial doubles match against Americans Mike and Bob Bryan.
Sweden are looking to pull off another upset in New York after beating holders Australia in round one.
Bjorkman had begun badly against Fish, dropping his serve in the first game and eventually losing the opening set.
But Fish, recalled by US captain Patrick McEnroe, found himself on the back foot as the Swede took control.
Bjorkman had a match point at 5-3 in the fourth set only for Fish to level at 5-5.
But the world number 27 took his Davis Cup record to 34-14 by breaking Fish in the 11th game and wasted little time sealing victory.
Roddick and Enqvist both made a slow start, exchanging two breaks of serve each before Roddick held for 5-4 and broke again in the 10th game to claim the first set.
The turning point arrived at 5-5 in the second when world
number 62 Enqvist squandered two break points, allowing Roddick to move 6-5 ahead.
The American took the initiative, grabbing the second of his two break points in the next game.
Enqvist's resistance effectively ended when he failed to take two more break points at the start of the third set.
