Spadea puts out Blake
Vince Spadea
Vince Spadea came back after a five-hour rain delay to beat fellow American James Blake 6-7 (12-14) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1.

The pair left the court at 5-5 in the first set and Spadea, who won his first title in 223 attempts three weeks ago, outlasted Blake on their return.

American Taylor Dent powered his way into the second round after beating Russia's Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-3.

The big-serving Californian was briefly delayed by morning rainstorms but then overpowered Youzhny in just one hour.

Dent will now meet Sweden's 26th seed Jonas Bjorkman in the next round.

Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador and Sweden's Thomas Enqvist finally finished their match nearly 24 hours after they started playing.

First they were delayed overnight by a power cut and then the two players were caught up in Thursday's rain delay.

It was Lapentti who finally progressed 7-5 2-6 6-4.

Slovak Karol Beck eased past Romania's Victor Hanescu and Czech Radek Stepanek eliminated Armenia's Sargis Sargsian.
