Fifth seed Ashley Harkleroad made an early exit from the St Jude Classic on Wednesday with defeat to Gisela Dulko.
The 18-year-old American lost 7-5 7-6 (7-3) to the unseeded Argentine in the second round in Memphis.
There was no such trouble for third seed Maria Sharapova, who led Tatiana Panova 2-1 when her fellow Russian retired with an injury.
Second seed Lisa Raymond of the USA reached the last eight with a 6-2 6-3 win over Russia's Galina Voskoboeva.
Sharapova now meets sixth seed American Amy Frazier in a quarter-final that will see the youngest and oldest players in the women's draw meet.
"I have a tough one in the next round against Frazier," said 16-year-old Sharapova.
"She's a very solid player. She's a veteran on the tour. I'm going to have to step up my game a little bit in that match."
