Fifth seed Ashley Harkleroad saw off Croatia's Silvija Talaja to reach the second round of the St Jude Classic.
The 18-year-old, ranked 47 in the world, came through 6-3 6-1 in Memphis.
Victory ended a run of three consecutive defeats for the highly-rated Harkleroad, who began the season by reaching the semis in Auckland.
Harkleroad will meet either Argentina's Gisela Dulko or Jarmila Gajdosova of Slovakia in the last 16.
In other matches, fellow American and sixth seed Amy Frazier beat compatriot Angela Haynes 6-4 6-2.
Slovakia's Martina Sucha beat improving Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro 7-5 7-5.
