American hopeful Ashley Harkleroad had a smooth passage into round two when Russian Elena Likhovtseva was forced to retire on Monday.
Harkleroad led 6-0 2-0 when Likhovtseva, who was clearly struggling, pulled out because of a strained right shoulder.
The 18-year-old world number 50 goes on to face Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld or compatriot Meghann Shuaghnessy next.
Tenth seed Tina Pisnik ensured there were no upsets on day one as she cruised into the second round.
The Slovenian, the only seed to be playing on Monday, triumphed 6-4 6-4 over Janet Lee.
Pisnik was joined in the second round by France's Stephanie Cohen-Aloro, Tathiana Garbin from Italy, and the Slovakian Martina Sucha.
Cohen-Aloro eased past Hungary's 6-3 6-3, Jankovic made light work of American Shenay Perry with a 6-3 6-0 win and Sucha overwhelmed Cara Black, of Zimbabwe, 6-0 6-3.
Amelie Mauresmo is the highest-ranked player in the tournament after Venus Williams withdrew on Monday.
The former world number one is still struggling with a stomach strain.
