Swisscom Challenge, Zurich
Fourth seed Elena Dementieva went out in straight sets to fellow Russian Nadia Petrova.
Dementieva was unable to recover after losing a first set tie-break, and eventually succumbed 7-6 6-3.
The two Russians broke each other three times in a hard-fought first set to take it to a tie-break, which Petrova won 7-3.
Dementieva's serve failed her in the second set, and Petrova held firm to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Earlier, Jelena Dokic reached the quarter-finals with a 4-6 7-5 6-1 win over Alexandra Stevenson.
She recovered strongly from a set down to secure her first victory over the American on the indoor carpet surface.
The unseeded Yugoslav was a beaten finalist in 2001 but lost to Stevenson in the second round last year.
Dokic will now take on either third-seed Amelie Mauresmo or defending champion Patty Schnyder of Switzerland.
There was little trouble for Belgium's world number two Justine Henin-Hardenne who beat Israeli Anna Pistolesi 6-1 7-6.
Henin-Hardenne, seeded second in the tournament, breezed through the first set, although Pistolesi made life more awkward in the second.
The Belgian will meet seventh seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia, who beat American Amy Frazier 6-3 7-5.
