Dementieva downs Petrova
Porsche Grand Prix, Filderstadt

Elena Dementieva
Russia's Elena Dementieva reached the second round after beating compatriot Nadia Petrova 6-3 6-3 on Wednesday.

Yet it was not all plain sailing for Dementieva, who was broken four times by Petrova, who reached the last four of the French Open.

"I think we both had a problem with our serve today, especially the first one, so it was difficult," Dementieva said.

"But when I could do it (serve) it was a little advantage for me and I felt I had a chance to win."

Anastasia Myskina was another Russian success story, recovering from a bad start to beat Alexandra Stevenson 0-6 6-1 4-0.

Stevenson retired with a back strain.

Myskina, who has won Leipzig and Moscow in successive weeks, admitted she was tired in the opening set but that her opponent let her into the match.

"I was a little bit tired. Not a little bit, a lot, and I couldn't really concentrate in the first set," said Myskina.

"Then she started missing a lot and I thought maybe I should try harder. I did, and then she retired.

Fifth seed Amelie Mauresmo beat American Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 6-2, while seventh seed Chanda Rubin had a good win over Vera Zvonareva, coming through 1-6 6-4 6-3.

Tashkent Open

Emmanuelle Gagliardi, the second seed, had little trouble in beating Patricia Wartusch 6-1 7-6 to reach the last eight.

Eighth seed Jelena Kostanic joined Gagliardi in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 7-5 defeat of Maria Kirilenko, and fourth seed Virginia Ruano Pascual beat Stephanie Foretz 6-3 6-1.
