Myskina lifts Kremlin Cup
Kremlin Cup

Myskina is the first Russian woman to win the Kremlin Cup

Anastasia Myskina's rich vein of form continued as she brushed aside second seed Amelie Mauresmo 6-2 6-4 to win her second title in two weeks.

The Muscovite received a hug from former president Boris Yeltsin as she became the first Russian woman to win the trophy.

The fourth seed defeated Mauresmo for the first time in three meetings.

Myskina handed Justine Henin-Hardenne a shock defeat a week ago to take the Leipzig title.

She started slowly against Mauresmo, facing two break points in the opening game, but having saved both she broke her opponent at the first opportunity.

The Frenchwoman broke back immediately and leveled at 2-2 but delivered two double faults at deuce in the sixth game to give Myskina a 4-2 lead.

The Russian held her serve and broke Mauresmo again in the eighth game to take the first set.

The Russian capitalized on Mauresmo's double fault in the fourth game of the second set to go up 3-1 and quickly jumped to a 5-3 lead.

But Mauresmo fought back at match point on a volley in the ninth game and went on to break Myskina's serve and keep herself in the match.

However, the second seed could not force a deciding set and a wild forehand volley gave Myskina another match point, which the Russian gratefully took.

"With every tournament title, a win at the Grand Slams is becoming more and more realistic," said Myskina, who now has six titles.
