Vera Zvonareva rallied strongly to beat Amanda Coetzer 4-6 6-1 6-2 in the Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Monday.
The Russian was out of sorts in the first set but regained her composure to outclass her South African opponent.
Coetzer won just one game in the second set and Zvonareva won four games in a row in the third set to win the match.
"I felt pretty nervous at the beginning, making too many unforced mistakes as I tried to adjust to a slow surface," Zvonareva said.
Russian teenager Vera Douchevina, in the main draw as a wild card, upset doubles specialist Lisa Raymond of the United States 6-2 7-6.
Magui Serna of Spain, winner of two titles this year, overcame Silvia Farina Elia of Italy 2-6 6-3 6-2.
She will face fourth seed Anastasia Myskina, who beat Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin-Hardenne to win the Sparkassen Cup last weekend.
