Schnyder will now play Clijsters or Dokic
|
Switzerland's Patty Schnyder went through to the quarter-finals by beating fifth seed Daniela Hantuchova.
Schnyder produced a great comeback after trailing 5-2 in the third set to win 6-4 4-6 7-6 in just over two hours.
She will now play the winner of the match between world number one Kim Clijsters and Jelena Dokic on Thursday.
Hantuchova has fallen from ninth to 13th in the world rankings in little over a month and now faces a difficult task to reach the season-ending WTA Tour Championships in
November.
Nigel Sears, Hantuchova's coach, said: "She's just short on confidence and is still emotional.
"But she's playing well and just needs to feel that. This
was a good performance, she just needs to win. Whoever won this
match was going to take a lot from it."
Sears added that Hantuchova had been regaining weight recently.
"It has been increasing, which is good, though it needs to
increase more."
World number 10 Anastasia Myskina reached the quarters by beating compatriot Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-2 6-3.
Third seed Myskina needed just 64 minutes to oust
Krasnoroutskaya and now faces fellow Russian Nadia Petrova or
German wild card Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the last eight.
Eighth seed Silvia Farina Elia went out in the second round, losing 7-5 6-3 to Maria Vento-Kabchi,
the Venezuelan qualifier.
