Top seed Elena Dementieva beat Maria Shaparova 6-4 7-6 to reach the semi-finals of the Polo Open in Shanghai.
In the battle of the Russians, 16-year-old Sharapova was out-hit by her more experienced opponent.
Second-seeded Chanda Rubin, of the US overpowered Germany's Anca Barna 6-1 6-4 to make it into the last four.
And third seed Ai Sugiyama from Japan beat Russian Dinara Safina 6-4 7-6.
On Saturday, Dementieva will play Sugiyama, while Rubin will face Akiko Morigami.
The Japanese defeated sixth seed Alicia Molik of Australia 7-6 7-5.
