Jelena Dokic reached the second round after her opponent Jelena Jankovic was forced to retire suffering from a shoulder injury.
Fifth-seeded Dokic led 7-6 4-4 when Jankovic withdrew.
Earlier, leg cramps forced out local favourite Zheng Jie and Tathiana Garbin, of Italy.
Zheng was behind Jill Craybas of the United States 3-6 7-6 2-0 and Garbin was losing to Sun Tiantian 7-5 2-3.
Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain beat Australian Nicole Pratt 6-4 6-3 and Akiko Morigami of Japan defeated Slovakia's Martina Sucha 6-2 6-3 to set up a match with fourth-seeded Conchita Martinez.
Anca Barna of Germany beat South Korea's Cho Yoon-Jeong 6-0 6-2 just two weeks after winning their match at the Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia by the same score.
