Second seed Kim Clijsters breezed into the third round in Stanford with a comfortable straight sets victory over American Amber Liu.
The French Open finalist was barely troubled in securing a 6-1 6-1 victory.
"I've been playing incredibly well this year and have no complaints," said the Belgian.
"I can't look ahead because if you do, you can lose matches easily. I'm more satisfied by seeing myself improve by all the work that I'm putting in than just by my results."
Sixth seed Meghann Shaughnessy crashed out at the second round stage after losing a tight contest to Switzerland's Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian.
The American won the first set but lost the second on a tiebreak before Mikaelian took the decider to complete a
3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory.
Greek number seven seed Eleni Daniilidou was also eliminated, losing 6-3 6-2 to Italy's Francesca Schiavone.
"I know how to play her tactically," said Schiavone. "I went to her backhand a lot and stayed aggressive."
Ninth seed Lisa Raymond did progress with a 6-4 6-2 over fellow American Angela Haynes.
