Anna Kournikova has decided not to enter the US Open due to a chronic back injury.
The popular Russian has played only a skeleton schedule this year and recently pulled out of two warm-up events for the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
The injury has already caused her to miss the French Open and Wimbledon.
However, the 22-year-old was able to take part in the World TeamTennis exhibition event in Pennsylvania, competing only in the doubles.
Kournikova and fellow Russian Tatiana Panova were the only absentees from the official US Open entry list released on Thursday.
Serena Williams will be aiming to win her sixth title in seven majors. She beat 2000-01 US Open champion Venus in last year's final at Flushing Meadows.
The seedings and draw will be announced during the week before the tournament, which begins on 25 August.
