Jennifer Capriati came from a set down to beat fellow American Meghann Shaughnessy in the quarter-finals.
Shaughnessy, conqueror of Venus Williams in the previous round, won the first set 6-4 only to lose the second 7-5 in the tie-break.
Sixth seed Capriati opened up a 3-1 lead at the start of the decider and held serve to seal her place in the semi-finals.
"I think physically, I didn't get tired and maybe she did a little bit," said Capriati of the third set.
"I think that was a big factor. I was able to stay aggressive and still move her around and mix up my shots and came to the net. I was just consistent in the third set."
Shaughnessy responded: "I went out thinking I could win. I was actually frustrated through most of the match."
Capriati will face 12th seed Chanda Rubin in the semi-finals after the American comfortably defeated number four seed Justine
Henin-Hardenne.
Rubin trailed the Belgian 3-1 in career meetings going into the match but dominated to secure a 6-3 6-2 victory.
She raced into a 5-1 lead in the opening set before Henin-Hardenne rallied to win the next two games.
Rubin clinched the the next game to take the set and then took five straight games in the second to tie up the match in 69 minutes.
"As the opponents get tougher, you really have to enjoy the matches you win," said Rubin, who is fighting her way up the rankings following knee surgery last
January.
"I'm focusing on being more consistent each week," she added. "Now, I feel I can play through to the finals of any tournament I go into."
Henin-Hardenne said: "I just played so badly at the beginning of the match.
"I didn't play my best tennis in any game of the match. Generally, I didn't play the game I wanted to."
