Unknown Korean stuns Ferrero
Ferrero failed to capitalise on a match point
Saturday's ATP round-up
Sydney International South Korean qualifier Lee Hyung-taik left the Sydney crowd stunned as he bounced back from a match point down to defeat world number four Juan Carlos Ferrero 4-6 7-6 7-6. Lee, the son of a potato farmer, wrapped up his first ATP Tour title after saving a match point in the third set against the far more experienced Spaniard. The result was the biggest shock in the history of the tournament. The world number 85 produced some sublime ground strokes throughout the encounter, using the width of the court to trouble Ferrero. Initially Ferrero looked at ease, taking just 29 minutes to seal the first set and looking on course for a straight sets victory before Lee upped the tempo of his game. He had a chance to break Ferrero's serve in the eighth game but failed to capitalise as the set headed for a tie-break, in which he did enough to win. Ferrero had a match point in the 12th game of the final set at 30-40 but he snapped at a forehand, sending it into the net. The match then went into a deciding tie-break, which Lee wrapped up 7-4.
Kooyong Classic Andre Agassi has had the ideal preparation for next week's Australian Open with a clinical 6-2 6-3 victory against Sebastien Grosjean in the final in Melbourne. The world number two, seeking his third Australian Open championship in four years, took little more than an hour to win his final warm-up tournament before the season opening Grand Slam.
Agassi was sharp and fresh throughout the brief contest, while his French opponent's game was blighted by a string of unforced errors. The only blip in the American's game came in the second set where a lapse in concentration saw him drop to 3-1 and 40-0 down on Grosjean's serve. But he turned the screw with five consecutive games to ensure his first Kooyong title since 2001. Agassi said: "When playing a guy with the talent, quickness and shot-making ability of Sebastien you have to get off to a good start because its pretty tough out there. "Today things went well for me out here early in the set and I was pretty fortunate to get back into the second set." Looking forward to the Australian Open, the former world number one added: "It felt pretty good today, I hope it all goes like this."
Heineken Open Gustavo Kuerten will face Dominik Hrbaty in the final in Auckland on Sunday after both players won back-to-back matches in the rain-affected tournament. Kuerten beat Argentine Guillermo Coria 7-5 4-6 6-2 in Saturday's quarter-final before overcoming Coria's countryman Mariano Zabaleta 6-3 6-3 in the semis. Hrbaty, who won the Auckland title two years ago, was made to work in his quarter-final tie against David Ferrer, which he won 7-5 6-3. But he cruised into a final showdown with Kuerten after ousting Felix Mantilla 6-2 6-2.
