Top seeds tumble in Brazil
Jelena Dokic
Jelena Dokic went down in straight sets

Top seeds Jelena Dokic and Monica Seles suffered shock defeats in the semi-finals of the Brazil Open on Friday.

Dokic went down 6-2 6-4 to third seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia, while second seed Seles lost 6-1 7-5 to Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.

"I think she (Dokic) was tired, because she participated in the singles and the doubles," said Myskina.

"For my part, I changed my style of play, putting more spin on the ball. I know she doesn't like that and it worked."

Guillermo Coria
Guillermo Coria has yet to drop a set
In a dramatic finale, 19-year-old Daniilidou fought off heat exhaustion to battle past Seles.

The Greek player received medical attention as she appeared to have difficutly breathing, and needed four match points before finally sealing the win.

In the men's event, the hopes of the home nation continue to be carried by Gustavo Kuerten.

The former world number one beat Argentina's Gaston Etlis 7-6 6-1 to set up a semi-final with Paraguay's Ramon Delgado, who defeated Andre Sa of Brazil 6-4 7-5.

"He served always close to the line and made perfect volleys," Kuerten said of Etlis. "But I was aggressive, and when I took the lead I really opened up."

Cecil Mamiit continued his impressive run with a 7-6 6-4 victory over fifth seed Agustin Calleri.

The American beat US Open semi-finalist Sjeng Schalken in the second round and now meets Argentina's Guillermo Coria, who upset seventh seed Dominik Hrbaty 6-2 6-4.
