Raymond eases through
Second seed Lisa Raymond
Raymond booked her place in the second round

Lisa Raymond of the US was a comfortable winner over Irina Selyutina of Kazakhstan in the opening round of the $140,000 Big Island Championships on Tuesday.

The second seed was a 6-4 6-2 victor and will now face 17-year-old Ashley Harkleroad in the second round of the tournament in Hawaii.

Raymond is the highest remaining seed left following the first round exit of top seed Anne Kremer of Luxembourg on Monday.

But Raymond is not taking anything for granted.

"There are so many good players out there now," she said. "This draw is chock full of them, so you have to take it one match at a time."

Harkleroad beat fellow American Jennifer Hopkins 6-4 7-5 to set-up a tie with Raymond.

"I thought that I played pretty well today," Harkleroad said.

"I played smart and just tried to run everything down and do my best to put pressure on her."

Fourth seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia moved into the second round with an easy 6-1 6-3 victory over Australia's Evie Dominikovic.

Her next opponent will be Ansley Cargill, who had to rally for a 5-7 7-6 (7/2) 6-0 victory over American qualifier Tara Snyder.

Sixth seed Marissa Irvin beat American compatriot Abigail Spears in three sets.

Spain's Conchita Martinez, the seventh seed, beat Germany's Angelika Roesch in straight sets, but eighth seed Alina Jidkova lost to Zimbabwe's Cara Black.
