Chela ends Corretja's hopes
Juan Ignacio Chela
Chela reached his second hard-court final of the year

Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela advanced to the TD Waterhouse final after defeating Alex Corretja of Spain 6-2 2-6 6-4.

Chela will face the unseeded Paradorn Srichaphan, of Thailand, who benefited from a walkover against defending champion Tommy Haas.

The German top seed had hinted on Friday that he might not be able to compete after struggling with a shoulder injury all week.

And he pulled out of the semi-final after an abortive attempt to warm up.

Tournament physician David Dines said: "He was unable to hold a racket, and there was no sense imposing any further damage that might have prevented him from competing in the US Open."

Chela secured his place in the final with a third straight win over Corretja on hard courts this year.

"In the second set he broke my service twice, but I wasn't concerned," Chela said.

"I'm really confident now going into the final, and I look forward to the US Open."

Corretja made 41 unforced errors.

"I just felt I had a good chance to get into the final," the Spaniard said.
