Davenport struggles through
Davenport was troubled by Tulyganova's power
Second seed Lindsay Davenport moved into the last eight of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament with a 6-4 7-6 (7/3) win over Iroda Tulyganova of Uzbekistan. It was not an easy win for Davenport, who has been named the fourth seed for next week's US Open. "I just had difficulties," Davenport said. "Not many girls serve between 110 and 115 miles per hour. "I haven't played somebody that served quite that hard except maybe Venus (Williams). "Fortunately, I felt when we were rallying I was hitting the balls well." Top seed Venus Williams had little trouble sealing her quarter-final place with a 6-2 6-4 win over Meghann Shaugnessy. American qualifier Laura Granville beat Angelika Roesch of Germany 7-5 6-2 to take her place in the last eight. In first-round matches Amelie Mauresmo beat Tatiana Panova of Russia, Daniela Hantuchova eased past Jennifer Hopkins, while Anastasia Myskina and Patty Schnyder also went through.
