Sampras vows to play on
Pete Sampras believes he can win another US Open
Pete Sampras says he has no intention of retiring at the end of this year, despite a serious decline in his form. But he will consider his options at the end of 2003 and could then call it a day. Sampras was speaking at the TD Waterhouse Cup where he is warming up for next week's US Open. "At the end of next year, I'll see where it's all at and then make a decision.
"That doesn't mean I'm going to stop or continue," he said. "I deserve to make my own decision as to when I leave the sport. "The days of dominating and being number one are over - I have to get my confidence back and you need to win matches for that to happen. "My goal is to win another major and I believe I can in this year's US Open." Sampras is not in action until Tuesday when he will play Paul-Henri Mathieu, who beat Guillermo Coria 6-1 7-6 (7/4). Richard Krajicek was also a first-round winner, with an easy 6-1 6-2 victory over Dominik Hrbaty. Krajicek is continuing his comeback after taking off almost two years to recover from an elbow injury.
