Mauresmo overwhelms Capriati
Jennifer Capriati was overwhelmed in the second set

Amelie Mauresmo produced a powerful display in the final of the Canadian Open to beat Jennifer Capriati 6-4 6-1.

The American second seed was looking for her first tournament win since January in a competition she last claimed in 1991 at the age of 15.

But she never looked like matching her teenage feat after her serve was broken by seventh seed Mauresmo in the last game of the first set.

Everything felt like it wasn't going my way no matter what I tried to do

The set had been finely balanced until 4-4 when Capriati disputed two linecalls, losing first her composure and then her serve in the subsequent game.

Mauresmo, who also beat Capriati at Wimbledon, broke twice in the second set before serving out for a comfortable victory.

The French player said afterwards that her main focus this week had been to prepare for the US Open, which begins at the end of the month.

"I just wanted to play a few matches and get my game in order and see how I'm doing against the best players - I guess it went pretty well," she said.

"The main thing is to be ready for the US Open."

Capriati admitted that the argument over the linecalls had distracted her.

"It was just that one game. I got upset and maybe it was a downward spiral from there," she said.

"Everything felt like it wasn't going my way, no matter what I tried to do.

"I didn't find a rhythm and with the wind, it was a mess out there."

There was some consolation for the 26-year-old American, however.

The $92,000 (£60,000) runner's-up prize took her past the $6m (£3.9m) mark in career earnings.
