Capriati overcomes Sugiyama
Jennifer Capriati
Capriati battled back in the second set

Jennifer Capriati gained revenge for last week's defeat by Ai Sugiyama to beat her in straight sets at the Rogers AT&T Cup in Montreal.

Capriati, the event's second seed, advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-1 7-5 win.

Martina Hingis
She had lost in straight sets to Japan's Sugiyama at a tournament in Los Angeles last week.

"Last time I was tired physically and she kind of caught me off-guard," said Capriati.

"This time I was ready for her."

After being overwhelmed in the first set, Sugiyama led 5-2 before Capriati battled back to win the next five games.

Former world number one Martina Hingis also advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-2 win over Argentina's Clarisa Fernandez.

Hingis remains unbeaten on her comeback
And the Swiss star looked in better form than in her first round win over Magui Serna as she returns from an ankle injury.

"It was definitely an improvement from my first match, a much better level," said Hingis.

"Sometimes it still feels a little funny being out there, but it's getting better every match."

Hingis will meet Jelena Dokic in the last eight, following the Yugoslav's 1-6 7-5 6-1 win over Alexandra Stevenson.

And Dokic said of the quarter-final clash: "She hasn't played in a long time so she's probably not at her best yet.

"It will be interesting to see how well she plays."

Fourth seed Kim Clijsters was upset 6-4 6-4 by Austria's Barbara Schett.

Schett will now meet eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova in the quarter-finals after a 6-1 6-3 win over South African Amanda Coetzer.

Amelie Mauresmo, the seventh seed, was pushed hard by American qualifier Laura Granville before advancing.

Fifth seed Justine Henin had few problems getting past Italian Francesca Schiavone.

Jelena Dokic recovered from dropping the opening set against American Alexandra Stevenson to make the qaurter-finals.
