Champion falls in Newport
Neville Godwin of South Africa
Godwin could not defend his title

Neville Godwin let his title slip with a first-round defeat at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island on Monday.

In-form American Jeff Morrison repeated his Wimbledon form on the grass of Newport to beat the South African 6-3 7-6.

Fourth seed Morrison beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round at the All England Club before losing to Sjeng Schalken.

One player who failed to match the heights of two weeks ago was Mario Ancic.

The Croatian teenager beat Roger Federer in straight sets at Wimbledon but fell 6-3 6-4 to big-serving American Taylor Dent on Monday.

In an all-German battle, fifth seed Alexander Popp beat Axel Pretsch 6-2 6-2.
