Hingis to miss Wimbledon
Martina Hingis
Hingis has not won a grand slam event since Jan 1999
Former Wimbledon champion Martina Hingis will miss this year's Championships after officially withdrawing on Thursday.

The 21-year-old underwent ankle surgery last month and has failed to recover in time for Wimbledon, which begins on 24 June.

Referee Alan Mills said: "We have received official notification that Martina Hingis is withdrawing from Wimbledon due to her left foot injury and subsequent surgery."

Hingis was also absent from the French Open - the first Grand Slam she had missed since turning professional in 1994.

After the surgery, Hingis' doctor said she would need "6-to-8 weeks of rest to help the healing process".
