Majoli's title drought ends
Croatia's Iva Majoli
Majoli grabbed her first win since the 1997 French Open
Iva Majoli beat Patty Schnyder 7-6 (7/5) 6-4

Iva Majoli beat Patty Schnyder in the Family Circle Cup final, and in doing so became the lowest ranked player ever to win a top-tier tournament.

The win was the Croatian's first singles title since the 1997 French Open.

The Croatian had shoulder surgery in 1999 and was out of the game for almost a year.

"I don't think I can even explain how it feels," said Majoli after.

"It's been so long since I won a tournament."

It's been the best week of my life

The match was the first top tier women's final featuring two unseeded players - Majoli is ranked 58th in the world, while Schnyder is 30th.

The first set had eight service breaks as the players slugged it out from the baseline.

It was a scrappy affair in great humidity and was decided in Majoli's favour by a tie-break.

After exchanging breaks at the start of the second set, Majoli broke with Schnyder serving to stay in the match at 4-5.

"If I lost the tie-breaker, I think she would've won the match," Majoli said.

Schnyder had beaten three top 10 players during the tournament - number one Jennifer Capriati in Saturday's semi-final, number seven Serena Williams and number 10 Amelie Mauresmo.

"Of course, I'm a little disappointed," said Schnyder.

"I thought I could win the whole thing, but I had so many great moments during the week.

"It has been the best week of my life."

Elsewhere, Germany's Martina Muller won her first WTA tournament Sunday defeating 16-year-old Myriam Casanova of Switzerland, 6-2 3-6 6-4 at the Budapest Grand Prix.
