Haas sees off Roddick

Fifth seed Tommy Haas beat American teenager Andy Roddick 6-3 6-2 to move into the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Germany's Haas took little time in dispensing with the 19-year-old 10th seed, winning in one hour 15 minutes.

A furious Roddick received a code violation in the first set after shouting and gesturing to the umpire when a line call went against him for 3-5.

Haas then romped to a 5-1 lead in the second set and although Roddick saved three match points on serve in the seventh game he finally surrendered on Haas' fifth match point.

"It's just a little bit annoying - it wasn't the best call I'd seen out there this week," Roddick said.

Haas will meet second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero in the last eight.

The Spaniard went through after third-round opponent Marcelo Rios retired with a knee injury in the second set.

Ferrero had taken the first set 6-0 and was dominating the second before the Chilean's long-standing knee problems resurfaced.

Carlos Moya
Moya beat his close friend Alex Corretja

Meanwhile, Spain's Carlos Moya defeated close friend and compatriot Alex Corretja 6-1 7-5 to book his quarter-final place.

In a repeat of the 1998 French Open final, Moya breezed through the first set in under half an hour, but was made to work much harder in the second.

"It is hard to play Alex because he is my friend and we have played each other so many times before," said Moya.

"I am just happy to have played well enough to win."

Moya will be joined in the last eight by another Spaniard, Albert Costa who knocked out Alberto Martin 7-5 6-3.

France's Sebastian Grosjean eliminated eleventh seed Jiri Novak in straight sets with an impressive performance to move into the last eight.

Britain's Tim Henman had to dig deep to overcome Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2 6-7(4/7) 6-4.

The number four seed's impressive clay court form continued although pushed hard by the Argentinian baseliner. Click here for full report
